OAKLAND, Calif. -- Tommy Milone experienced a most unusual wait to make his debut with the Oakland Athletics. As in one trip to Japan and back before he eventually started Game 5 of the season. Milone allowed three hits over a career-high eight innings in an impressive outing his first time out with his new team, and the As beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Monday night. "Obviously, especially when you get named the No. 3 starter you want to go out and pitch," Milone said. "The scheduling was a little different. Its something youve got to adjust to and roll with it." Milone (1-0) faced the minimum in five of his innings, including getting through the fourth despite throwing only two strikes among his 10 pitches. Perhaps for a night, Milone made it easier for the small group of fans who turned out at the Coliseum to picture life without lefty Gio Gonzalez. The As acquired Milone from the Nationals in December, sending All-Star Gonzalez to the nations capital. Milone won his sixth career start after the Nationals won all of his five starts last season. Grant Balfour finished the three-hit shutout for his second save in as many chances. Milone started the game by allowing a leadoff double to Jason Bourgeois, who was then thrown out on an impressive double play in which right fielder Josh Red*** caught Lorenzo Cains liner and fired to third baseman Josh Donaldson, who backhanded the short one-hopper and put the tag on from his knees. "It was one of those things he threw it right on the base and I really didnt want him to get to the bag," Donaldson said. "I used my catcher instincts." Donaldson also delivered an RBI single in the second that held up for Milone. The As missed chances to add on that inning, then Donaldson struck out swinging with the bases loaded in the sixth. Luis Mendoza hung tough through 5 2-3 innings in the opener of Kansas Citys lone trip to Oakland this year. The right-hander (0-1), who went 4-0 with a 0.47 ERA in six spring training starts, allowed one earned run on five hits, struck out two and walked four. Those two strikeouts were impressive just based on who they were against -- new As cleanup hitter Yoenis Cespedes. Cespedes, who hit three home runs in his first four games that were all against Seattle, also drew a walk and grounded out. Coco Crisp, who moved to left field so Cespedes could start the year in his familiar centre field spot, singled in the seventh then stole his first base of the year. Kurt Suzuki added three hits for the As. After a day off Sunday following two home games with the Mariners to wrap up a season-opening series that began with two games in Tokyo, the As were returning to a more regular regimen. "It felt a little weird," said manager Bob Melvin, who took in the Masters on Sunday. "Were back on our routine." Royals manager Ned Yost sat Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon for the opener of the three-game series after Moustakas went 1 for 11 and Gordon 0 for 13 in Kansas Citys winning series to open the year at Los Angeles. Yost said both would be back in the lineup Tuesday night. Bourgeois led off in Gordons spot and gave Kansas City more production there in one at-bat than it got in the entire three-game series against the Angels. The Royals had three runners thrown out on the bases. "Thats the way we play. We play aggressive and we play to win," Yost said. "We dont play safe. We pick our spots, and give them credit, they executed." Kansas City is eager to return home this weekend considering the Royals havent been back since before spring training began in February. The As announced late in the game that right-handed reliever Joey Devine would undergo right elbow surgery Tuesday performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. Devine had "Tommy John" reconstructive surgery in April 2009. Notes: Yost will look to get Mitch Maier in a game this week after he didnt play in the first four. ... As LHP Brett Anderson, recovering from "Tommy John" surgery will throw his next bullpen session in the next day or so with the catcher behind the plate so Andersons throws are from the full distance of the mound to the plate. The catcher had been standing on the plate recently. ... The As activated 1B Daric Barton after a strained shoulder landed him on the DL to start the season. 1B Brandon Allen was designated for assignment to clear roster room. ... Oakland Jemile Weeks started at 2B and batted leadoff after turning his left ankle late in Saturdays loss to Seattle. After hitting safely in all six of his games vs. Kansas City last season, he singled up the middle in the fifth. ... Crisp is successful in his last 24 steal attempts. ... MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Karen Paolozzi became the second female player to make the cut in the PGA Professional National Championship, and University of Toledo coach Jamie Broce took the second-round lead in windy conditions Monday. Playing from tees in front of the men, Paolozzi followed her opening 75 at Grande Dunes with a 71 at The Dunes -- the site of the final two rounds -- to move into a tie for 31st at 2 over. Suzy Whaley was the first women to make the cut in 2005 at Kiawah Island. A former Indiana University player, the 31-year-old Paolozzi is a PGA assistant professional at Druid Hills in Atlanta. "This is exactly what my goal was," Paolozzi said. "I wanted to make the cut. I wanted to come here and play well. I was a little disappointed after yesterday, but I knew if I put in a solid round today, I had a chance." The 37-year-old Broce had an even-par 72 at Grande Dunes to take a one-stroke lead over Ryan Helminen. Broce had a 4-under 140 total. "Yestterday, the conditions were a little more benign, but today was a lot different.dddddddddddd The wind kept you uneasy," Broce said. "I just got into a plan to hang in there and survive. I got away with a couple bad swings and was able to come back. I just plan to have fun and play golf the next two days and see what happens." Helminen, the PGA teaching professional at Ridgeway in Neenan, Wisconsin, overcame double bogeys on his fifth and sixth holes at Grande Dunes for a 73. "I got a lot out of that round," Helminen said. "When youre 5 over through six holes and going the wrong way and you make a birdie and some par-saving putts, it lifts your spirits." The top 20 Wednesday will get spots in the PGA Championship in August at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky. Paolozzi isnt eligible to earn a spot in the PGA Championship because she didnt play from the mens tees last fall when she qualified in the Northern Ohio PGA Section Championship. wholesale stitched jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys china ' ' '
