The FIFA Womens World Cup of soccer wrapped up in Germany on the weekend and took a bow as one of the more compelling events of the summer sports scene. It was a tournament that had a bit of everything - dramatic finishes, controversy, capacity crowds, and a champion in Japan that even the runner-up Americans couldnt help but feel good about. With that in mind, our question to you today is: Did the Womens World Cup win you over? Your response is relevant, because the next World Cup will be showcased right here on Canadian soil in 2015. The championship game on Sunday, in which the favoured U.S. twice took one-goal leads only to have Japan twice tie them, finished with the drama of penalty kicks. The Americans wrote the script on drama in the quarterfinals, when Abby Wambach scored in the 122nd minute to tie Brazil and eventually send that game to a shootout as well. The victory by Japan was the first by an Asian nation at the global event, and they became just the fourth country to capture the trophy alongside the U.S., Germany, and Norway. More importantly, Japans victory provided an emotional boost to a country that is still dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. Germany as a nation embraced the event, with nearly 74,000 fans turning out for the hosts first game against Canada. Some 18 million television viewers watched that match, and another 48,817 attended Sundays final. Some of the best players in the game continued to steal moments in the spotlight as well. Brazils Marta - considered the best player in the world - scored four goals in four games. Americans like Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo provided highlight-reel moments, while Japans Homare Sawa was an inspiration to her nation, scoring five goals in her fifth World Cup appearance. It was a tournament where Canada experienced disappointment after entering the event as the sixth-ranked nation. Canada went down 2-1 to Germany, and was then eliminated after shutout losses to both France and Nigeria. Canadian captain Christine Sinclair will be remembered for playing on in the tournament with a mask after having her nose broken by a blow to the face in the opening game. The tournament will expand from 16 to 24 nations when the event comes to Canada four years from now. Seven cities have officially bid to host games, including Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, and Moncton. A decision from FIFA should come late this year on which sites will play host to some of the 52 matches that will be played. So in the afterglow of the Womens World Cup in Germany, did the event win you over? As always, its Your! Call.
